[personal profile] zulu and I are okay, if you've been seeing the Calgary flood news, thankfully! I hope everyone else in the area is safe too.

Canada 101 [Jun. 2nd, 2013|10:38 am]
I've been here over two years (!) and I've learned a lot about Canada via simple living-here-osmosis. But I'm still embarrassingly unknowledgeable about basic history, politics, cultural movements...

As part of my on-going education, please throw at me your favorite/must-read books (including academic!), comics, documentaries about anything Canadian. :3 I'm mostly thinking of non-fiction (example: Hyena in Petticoats by Willow Dawson), but fiction too is good.

[personal profile] zulu and [personal profile] daemonluna have recommended thus far Gordon Korman (HOW HAVE I NOT READ "I WANT TO GO HOME" YET /)_(\) and Don Meredith.

not a gingercrack house [Nov. 10th, 2012|07:01 pm]
For well over a decade now, I've been a Christmas hater. I'd grown disillusioned with the capitalistic/materialistic aspects of the season; I dislike the traditional carols; I don't like red and green as a color scheme; and, as an atheist, the date just reminds me that my allegedly secular states prioritize Christianity.

When the topic came up with Zulu, I eagerly put forth my opinion!

ME: Let's ignore and hate Christmas :D! Our home can be a sanctuary from all that cheesy crap!
ZULU: But I like that cheesy crap :(
ME: >:O!!
ME: NO CHRISTMAS CAROLS IN OUR HOUSE
ME: AND NO RED AND GREEN
ZULU: *shrugs* Okay
ZULU: But I like doing special stuff...

I kinda like Zulu and stuff, so, I promised I'd try to figure out if there was particularly Christmas-y stuff I could adhere to. Silver is another seasonal colour, right? I like silver. But beyond that??? I was pretty stumped.

I don't think I'm ever going to embrace the way Christmas is done by stores/our culture at large. But the more I think about it, I do want to create positive feelings with this season if only to not be all "grrr!!" as the months approach December. And [personal profile] coffeesuperhero and [personal profile] lovelythings wrote about how much they love this time of year in part because of the traditions they've built together.

That's something to be valued, I think. Created traditions. Zulu's family has a few I like (including building a gingerbread house), and I want to build so of our own with Zulu. I imagine traditions aren't decreed one day-- I imagine they must stand the test of time, developing with iterations. But, to the extent that we can decide them...

We got several candles and beautiful candle holders. If, in the northern hemisphere, it is a dark time of year, then we can strengthen our spirit with light. The little flames are entrancing, warm, welcoming. The light reflects on the glass, creating patterns, emulating life. (And Chelsea! Chelsea was fascinated and stayed forever watching, sometimes coming in closer to sniff and sniff and sniff ♥)

I think I can learn to like this season, a little bit.

my thought process [Nov. 10th, 2012|10:49 am]
Washing dishes is so annoying!

I wish I had self-cleaning dishes.

Cats are self-cleaning.

But I wouldn't want to eat off a cat!

Life is so hard :(

vid rec: Who's That River Song? [Sep. 30th, 2012|10:21 am]
*BEAMS*

It is DONE. grelse, my sister-in-law, finished her River song vid! :D :DDD (She's been working on it since... basically since I met her in person, yeah.)

I don't even watch Doctor Who and this vid still moves me every time! River Song is clearly the best ♥ ♥ ♥ As is grelse, with her perfect timing and story narrative (and she's so good with Premiere, aldskjfaldkfj, she is like a duck in water!).

Also recommended to non-Doctor Who fans who enjoy women being thoroughly cool ♥

holy yikes [Sep. 17th, 2012|07:43 pm]
Fall in Calgary is the best time of year. Bright days, cool nights, and astoundingly yellow leaves. The lawn before us is scattered with leaves, and for all that fall is a symbol of coming death etc, the sight fills me with a sense of newness.

But I'm about to leave all this beautiful fall gorgeousness behind! For spring in Brazil! Imma leave my snugglebunny and my kitties and Imma face my family and that'll be stressful and-- priorities always in order-- I don't even know if internet at home is working! ;A; But, on the plus side, I'm going back to Floripa! And I can go for walks and see my buddy R and old friends and eat favorite foods and see my family!

Feelings: conflicted

But as long as I brought up the topic of cats, let's continue along that avenue :D Guys, Chelsea (whose full name I realized is Doctor Chelsea Kensington) is so ridiculous there aren't even words. She fell into a toilet. She attacks her tail via continuous somersaults and her favorite place is a bag filled with bags in the closet and her little right eyebrow is orange. Her paws are big now! Her fur is soft! And for the first time ever, last night she behaved well enough to not be placed into her room.

And Maddy, though more prone to tail-flicking from being on the lookout from young teethy sisters, continues lovely and sweet. She'll hop onto the bed in the early hours of the morning and purr loudly as I pet her.

...Holly yikes I'm going back to Brazil >:O!

HELP

My brain is back in 1994 and again OBSESSED WITH RANMA 1/2 D: (how did this happen! how!! i haven't thought of that series in twelve years!). Look, it's so bad that I regret throwing away my English-dub tapes. (How else am I going to hear classic phrases like "It's a cute little dollie"?!!) And, man, I'm certain I threw away all my manga volumes, too ;____;

The fic archives seem to be down ;___; Now how to find those (what seemed then, anyway) long fic classics with plot and dark interpretations lemons??

And, so help me deities I don't believe in, I've come a long way in understanding what healthy relationships look like, but my heart still ships Ranma/Akane like my house is on fire. (And all the other things that I can perceive a little more clearly now, like fuck, Genma is a terrible, terrible father.)

posted on fb, will try here too :D [Aug. 26th, 2012|11:00 am]
Kitty lovers, lend me thine ears! :) As you may well know, Zulu and I are now the happy parents of a feisty, lively, pouncy tortoise-tabby. She's four months old and was living out doors for who knows how long... She's got a clean bill of health and up to date on her shots, so now the question is, raising her!

Chelsea loves to play and will occasionally accept, with vehement purring, twenty seconds of petting. But for the most part, she sees other live beings as things to pounce on and bite. Right now she's too tiny to inflict damage, but that'll change, and we want to train her out of that.

We understand that the pouncey-bitey stuff is what kittens do. But is there any way we can encourage her to accept signs of affection and/or not jump-attack on everything that moves?

the dilema: gnat-like attention span [Jul. 22nd, 2012|02:10 pm]
So many fascinating things: reading, drawing, comics, cooking, politics, sports, photography, books, playing video games, organizing your space just so, blogging, hanging out with friends, movies, and on and on and on.

The choices are dizzying. How to begin to pick? I stay at a standstill, unable to pick.

auction help! [Jul. 21st, 2012|08:27 am]
....Being an idiot, I only just realized the auction ended today =__=

So, to sum up quickly: [community profile] help_for_ephemere is "a fundraiser to benefit ephemere, with the aim of supporting her in the wake of her losing her job, home, and good relations with her family due to homophobia."

I've known Mia for two years, and she's been a good friend. She's a beautiful person who gives so much of herself, and she's in a very difficult situation right now. To do what I can, I'm auctioning a drawing or painting.

Bid if you like :D! You can ask for a new piece by me (and I think you guys know my style?) or anything I've made since 2011 (and therefore have access to). Or, if you want books or fic or knitted pieces or reviews or more, there's several other auctions to bid on. Bidding closes in a few hours, July 21, 9 PM GMT (time zone converter). Have a peek :D

ME: Yeah, it's the 20th year anniversary
ZULU: And they're making a new anime adaptation
ME: AAAAAAAAAH
ZULU: ?
ME: THAT CAN'T BE TRUE
ME: alsdkfjaldkfjaldkfjLKAJDFLAKJDFLAKDJF

confession: for years i have periodically trolled the internet for any signs when naoko takeuchi would take up a new series and/or they'd create more sailor moon canon in any form

I AM BOTH SO SCARED AND SO EXCITED

I WANT THEM TO DO ALL FIVE STORY ARCS

AND MORE, IF NAOKO TAKEUCHI WOULD WRITE UP ANYTHING AFTER THAT

>:D!!!!!!!!!!!

THIS COULD BE SO AWFUL

AND SO AWESOME

I WANNA KNOW WHAT THE ART IS GONNA LOOK LIKE. AND WILL IT BE MORE FAITHFUL TO THE MANGA? OR KINDA LIKE DRAMA, WHICH BECAME ITS OWN STORY? ALDJALKDFJALDFKJ

IT SHOULD BE 2013 RIGHT NOW
